One of the most significant obstacles of any home improvement project is putting a plan into action.

You might have a variety of initiatives for elevating your living spaces – but taking those first steps toward converting those ideas into reality can be daunting.

If one of those plans is to build a home theater, our team at AVWORX is here to help guide you through those beginning stages of the process.

As the Ogden area’s leading home theater installation company, we have helped countless homeowners throughout Utah achieve their home cinema dreams.

So, if you’re ready to take those first steps toward building your brand-new home theater, below are three tips to help you begin the process now.

1) Determine Your Budget.

Before you even start thinking about how you will build your home theater, it’s critical that you sit down and think about how much money you can commit to the project.

You won’t just enjoy one evening in your theater. You’ll be spending hundreds, if not thousands, of hours consuming media content in that space the following months and years. Our point is that you need to commit to including technology and seating conducive to an enjoyable viewing experience not only the first time you watch a movie but also for the long-term, as well.

Once you determine how much you want to spend on your project, the next step is figuring out how you want to allocate your funds between the necessary audio-video equipment, interior décor and your chairs. This part all depends on your tastes.

Perhaps you’d like a home cinema that’s stylish and features a custom design and décor. Maybe you’d prefer a theater that prioritizes a best-in-class auditory and visual experience, featuring the latest in projector and surround sound technology.

By creating a thorough budget for your theater that allows you to invest in the aspects that you are most passionate about, you can be prepared for the upcoming, perhaps daunting stages of your project.

2) Get the Room Dimensions Correct.

If you’re building your home theater as a brand-new addition to your house, you have the luxury of being able to construct your space to the exact specifications for an ideal acoustic setup.

So, what do you need to know? The best way to determine the ideal dimensions for your home theater is through a calculation we like to call the “Golden Ratio.” Based on the height of the room, the perfect length, for example, should be 2.6 times the height. The ideal width, meanwhile, is 1.6 times the height.

Of course, you also need to take the number of seats you will feature in your cinema into consideration. You don’t want to stuff too many chairs into a small space – that simply is uncomfortable. If you want an expansive seating setup, you might need a larger room.

Perhaps, however, you don’t have the luxury of building your home theater and instead are renovating an existing space in your house. In that case, you don’t have to worry. Acoustic wall treatments will help cover any flaws in the acoustic setup of your room.

But it’s also important you select the right space to house your theater setup. We strongly recommend opting against building a theater setup in a room with even dimensions due to acoustic issues that can arise. Even if the room you select has windows, you still can counteract natural light through blackout shades.

We invite you to bring a simple ‘sketch’ of your room with complete dimensions into our design center and we can transform this information into a helpful CAD drawing.  This makes planning much simpler and effective for the most performance and comfort out of your new theater.

3) Consider a Home Theater Installation Professional

Finally, the third tip we want to share with you is to consider reaching out to your local home theater installation professional.

The fact is, there are so many components of building a home theater that it can be daunting – from picking out the right A/V equipment to formalizing the design and electrical layouts to the construction and wiring of the theater to calibrating your technology and readying it for use.

While it’s possible to do it all on your own, it can be intimidating – and it can cause you to delay the project if you don’t know where to start.

When you partner with AVWORX, for example, you can rest assured knowing not only that your theater will be built within a set timeline to your budget specifications but also that you’ll receive expert support along the way in product selection, system design and installation. We’ll even coordinate with other project stakeholders such as your construction team, interior designers or electricians to ensure everything is completed to your expectations.

All you’ll need to do is sit back and relax. Our team will custom-build your home theater precisely to how you dreamt it to be.
